Reminder: PA DAY Monday Feb 2

Just a reminder that it is a professional activity day on Monday Feb 2 2015 and there is NO SCHOOL for our students.

Religious Accommodations

For many students and staff in York Region public schools, there are a number of situations in which the practice of their
religion will result in requests for accommodations on the part of the school and/or the Board. These situations may include:
• Religious holidays and celebrations
• School opening or closing exercises
• Prayer
• Dietary requirements
• Fasting
• Religious attire
• Modesty requirements
• Participation in daily activities and curriculum

When concerns related to beliefs and practices arise in schools, collaboration among school, student, family, and religious
community is often needed in order to develop appropriate accommodations. Building trust and mutual respect is an important
aspect of accommodation. Administrators and teachers are to ensure fairness and respect for the diverse
religious beliefs and practices of students and staff in the school system. However, school administrators and teachers should
not be placed in positions of monitoring a child’s compliance with a religious obligation.

D.3 Prayer
Schools should make every reasonable effort to accommodate the requirement for daily prayer by providing an appropriate
location within the building for prayer. This may mean a quiet space in the library or an empty room, or wherever it is mutually
satisfactory for the school and the student or staff member.
Some accommodation for late school arrival or early school departure may be necessary. For some religions, the time for

prayer changes with the seasons or lunar calendar.

At Bayview Hill ES, we have designated a room in our school for students, staff and/or occasional staff to accommodate their need for prayer.  Parents, please encourage your child to go to the office at the time that a space is needed, and we will provide access to the room.   If you have any questions, please speak to Admin Carol Takagi or Jen Branch in the office.

Kids in Motion Lunchtime programs

Flyers went home on Friday (one per household).  Programs offered include Taekwon-do, Basketball, Badminton, and Cartooning for students in grades 1 to 6.    If for some reason, your family did not receive one and you are interested in the programs available, please see our school website http://bayviewhill.es.yrdsb.ca/ for more information and/or pick up a copy of the flyer available in the office.

Richmond Hill Extra Curricular programs at BHES

Today, a KIDS in MOTION flyer went home with our students in grades 1 through 6 (1 per household).  These are programs offered through the Town of Richmond Hill at lunchtime and after school.  Registration opens on Wednesday January 28 and closes on Wednesday February 4.  Programs begin the week of February 9.

A Sampling of Visual Arts in Primary

Visual Arts in Primary Classes: One activity was using black crayon and water colours to explore different lines in art, another was inspired by Piet Mondrian when  learning about primary colours and snow "people" were a theme as well.

Bing Bing and New Day Foster Home

As you know, every  year our school hosts a Bake Sale in the Spring to raise funds for the New Day Foster Home, a charity that supports an orphanage in China for children with special needs.   In addition, this year, the New Day Foster Home has asked that our school pick an English name for a little girl. Each class in our school is contributing 3 names for this little girl that means perseverance and strength.  Once the names are collected, there will be tally taken and classes will pick the top 2 names.

Intermediate Dance Program Jan 19-23

During the week of January 19, our Grade 7 & 8 students will be participating in dance workshops, led by professional dance artists.  Last year, they learned and performed musical theatre.  This year, each class will be learning a different form of dance,  culminating in a performance piece.  Thanks to Lauren Miller and our Arts Team for organizing our musical arts experiences this year.  Because the gym will be in use for the dance program, students in other classes need to come prepared to be outside for their gym periods.  Please ensure that your child is dressed for the weather with boots, mittens, hats, scarves, snow pants and warm jackets.  In the case of inclement weather, students will be inside.

REMINDER: Kindergarten Registration begins January 16

REMINDER: Children who turn four or five years old during 2015, live within the school boundary and whose parents are public school tax supporters will be eligible to register for kindergarten.

Parents are reminded to bring the following documentation when registering:

- Proof of residency (E.g. Purchase agreement/Rental Lease agreement, current tax assessment, utility bill with address, telephone bill with address)
- Proof of date of birth (Birth certificate or passport)
- Parent's Driver's license
- Any legal documents related to custody arrangements (if applicable)

Full School Yearbook

This year, Mr. Dan Grant and a team of students are creating a yearbook that will include the full school. Each class will be represented in the yearbook, as well as teams, clubs, activities and events throughout the year.  The cost of the yearbook will likely be $25.00.  Stay tuned for more information.

Reminder: PA DAY Friday January 16

There is No School for students.  See you on Monday!

Congratulations to our Junior Volleyball Team

Yesterday, our Junior Volleyball Team came in second at the Red Maple Tournament.  According to coaches Jane Sawchuk and Naseem Khorakchi, they played amazing!  They were energetic, determined and persevered throughout the tournament.  Last week, our team came in first at a tournament.  Congrats Jr. Volleyball team, you have represented Bayview Hill well with your demonstration of improved skills.

You are invited to DIVERSITY NIGHT

LATE ARRIVALS

This morning, we had 65 students arrive late.  This means that they do not get to their class until closer to 9:15am as they need to be signed in at the office and results in an interruption of instructional time.  Please consider leaving your home earlier in the morning to reduce congestion at the front of the school OR consider dropping your child on a side street at the back or side of the schoolyard.  On extreme cold mornings like this, our students enter the building at 8:45am.  Unfortunately, we cannot have them enter earlier as we don't have supervision for them.  We would appreciate your cooperation in making every attempt to have your child at school prior to 9am.  Thank you.  Stay warm, it's a chilly one out there today.

Character Assemblies hosted by Gr 6s

On Thursday, our school had 3 assemblies to recognize students for the character trait of EMPATHY.  Each month, a different grade 6 class plans, prepares and hosts all of our assemblies.  Please take a look at their work in the link below. They have done a wonderful job at integrating technology and specialized apps with their messaging around our January trait of PERSEVERANCE.  Specifically, don't miss clicking the individual pics on the slide "Ways to demonstrate perseverance".

Congratulations to our character award recipients and our grade 6s for their hard work in preparing and delivering such thoughtful  presentations.

Late arrivals

The past two mornings we have had more than 60 students arriving late in the morning, all between 9 and 9:15am.  All students who are late, must sign in at the office which results in a late entry to their classrooms.  We do understand that there are a variety of reasons for late arrivals when temperatures are extreme.  We would like to remind families, that when temperatures are extreme, students may enter the building at 8:45am and will be supervised at this time. We do not have supervision prior to this time. If possible, please consider dropping off your children at 8:45am and/or dropping off students on a street that backs onto the school or at the side of the schoolyard so that we can avoid a disruption to instruction and have greater flow of traffic in front of the school.  We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Stay warm.

Please dress for winter weather

We have had a number of students arrive to school today without appropriate winter clothing.  With such cold temperatures, please make sure that your child leaves home in the morning with mittens, hat, winter jacket and winter boots, as well as snow pants.   For our younger students, it is also a good idea to send extra socks to ensure dry, warm feet over the course of the day.

REMINDER: When the temperature outside reaches  –20C with or without wind-chill, or when it is deemed that the play areas are unsafe due to icy conditions, students will remain inside at recess.   When temperatures hover close to -20C (-18 or -19) it is likely that students will receive a shortened recess  and therefore should always come to school dressed appropriately for the weather conditions.

Orthodox Christmas Greeting

To all of our families  who celebrate Orthodox Christmas, we would like to wish you and your families a very happy celebration.

Inclement and Extreme cold weather

To ensure the safety of students, school bus service may be cancelled from time to time due to inclement weather, extreme temperatures and/or poor road conditions. In these cases, parents and students should develop alternate care/transportation arrangements. Since some busing schedules begin by 7:00 a.m., cancellation decisions must be made by 6:00a.m. to allow time to communicate this message to bus drivers.
Parents, students and school staff are asked to access radio and television stations after 6:00 a.m. to receive bus cancellation information:
Unless otherwise stated, schools will remain open and parents can make arrangements to transport their children to and from school even if school bus service is cancelled.  Please  pre-determine a meeting spot for the end of the day and/or a “Plan B” for when the bus is late arriving at a stop.
If buses are cancelled in the morning, they will not operate in the afternoon.  Anytime your child is absent from school, it is important that you call the school to ensure their safety.
When the temperature outside reaches  –20C with or without wind-chill, or when it is deemed that the play areas are unsafe due to icy conditions, students will remain inside at recess.  It is possible that students will receive a shortened recess when temperatures are close to –20C and therefore should always come to school dressed appropriately for the weather conditions.
